In Her Own Words

In an exclusive interview, Sharon shared insights about her life, inspirations, and philanthropic endeavors.

Q: Could you tell us about your background and what inspired your journey into philanthropy?
My journey into philanthropy began with a lesson I learned as a child—a moment so vivid and transformative that it shaped the core of who I am today. One night, when I was eight, my father, who often brought me along as his “helper” to collect rent, encountered a tenant who couldn’t pay because she didn’t have enough money to feed her children. Without hesitation, he handed her the envelope of rent money and added an extra twenty-dollar bill. I was stunned and questioned why he would do that when we were struggling, too. My father gently explained that in life, there will always be people richer than you. In life, there will always be people poorer than you. And in life, it may not always seem fair. But in life, you can always make it more fair for others. That moment planted the seed of philanthropy in my heart.

Q: How did the Bay Area shape your values and outlook on giving back?
Growing up in the Bay Area was like being in a melting pot of innovation and community spirit. The region’s unique blend of cultures and its emphasis on social responsibility naturally instilled in me a passion for giving back. It’s hard not to be inspired when you’re surrounded by people who are constantly striving to make a positive impact.

Q: Your husband started out selling firecrackers — in high school! How did that influence his later work?

Oh, the firecracker days! (Sharon laughs.) That early venture was more than just a teenage hustle; it was a crash course in entrepreneurship. It taught him the importance of understanding market demand, managing finances, and the thrill of turning a profit. These lessons became the foundation for his future business endeavors, proving that sometimes, a little spark can lead to a booming career.

Q: How do you balance family, business, and philanthropy?

Balancing these aspects requires intentional time management and setting clear priorities. Family remains at the core of everything I do, and I make sure to integrate business and philanthropic activities in a way that they complement rather than compete with each other. Open communication and a strong support network are essential. It’s not always easy, but by staying true to my values and focusing on what matters most, I’ve found a way to give my best to all three areas.

Q: What inspires you about the Lunar New Year flavors you’ve selected?

Each flavor tells a story of tradition, joy, and togetherness. From the richness of Madagascar chocolate to the playful sweetness of strawberry, they reflect the essence of Lunar New Year. Mint represents new beginnings, while Peruvian dark chocolate exudes luxury and family togetherness. Every bite is meant to embody the festive spirit and joy of sharing these moments with loved ones.

Q: Are there any causes or organizations in the Bay Area that are especially close to your heart?

Absolutely! I’m passionate about several Bay Area organizations that are making waves in our community. Dress for Success San Francisco empowers women to achieve economic independence, and the San Francisco Symphony, Ballet, and BroadwaySF unite our community through shared experiences. But one especially close to my heart is City College of San Francisco. My parents, who immigrated here without knowing English, benefited from CCSF’s ESL program, which helped them become successful entrepreneurs. I was honored to help raise funds for the new Financial District/Chinatown Campus, and today, the second floor is named in tribute to my parents.

Q: What are you most excited about in the coming year, both personally and in your philanthropic endeavors?

I’m incredibly excited about the year ahead! On a personal note, I’m overjoyed to spend quality time with my family. My two granddaughters fill my heart with joy, and this year, I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of not one, not two, but three grandsons—all within a single month! It’ll feel like having triplets, and I can’t wait to shower them with love and laughter.

In the kitchen, I’m looking forward to perfecting new recipes to delight my family and friends. There’s nothing more rewarding than gathering loved ones and creating joy through delicious meals and shared moments.

Philanthropically, I’m dedicated to continuing my work in the performing arts, education, and health-related causes to uplift and connect our community. I’m also excited to support our new San Francisco mayor, whose vision aligns with mine: improving public safety, fostering economic development, ensuring quality public education, and emphasizing accountability. Having supported his campaign, I was honored to be recognized in his collage of contributors and fully embrace his call to action for all San Franciscans to roll up their sleeves and get to work. I’m ready to do my part to help make this city shine again and will gladly volunteer in any way I can.
